It appears first in the novel's opening night of violence, when Dim unwinds a "real horrorshow length of oozy" from around his waist and swings it "beautiful in the eyes or glazzies" during the gang fight with Billyboy's crew. The chain is Dim's signature tool, a length of metal that he uses with savage effectiveness, blinding opponents and leaving them howling. In the fight against Billyboy, the chain proves decisive. Dim unwinds it from his waist, twice wound, and begins to swing it, targeting the eyes of Billyboy's droogs. One of Billyboy's men, his belly already laid open by Alex's cut-throat britva, loses his guard and lets in Dim's chain, which snakes "whisssssshhhhhhhhh" and chains him "right in the glazzies," sending him tottering off howling. The chain is also used to blind Billyboy's number-one, Leo, who is brought down underfoot, crawling and howling like an animal before a boot to the head finishes him. In these moments, the chain is not merely a weapon but a tool of domination, a way to incapacitate and humiliate enemies, leaving them sightless and helpless.

The Chain Turned Against Alex

The chain's most significant appearance comes during Alex's betrayal and arrest. After Alex has asserted his leadership by slashing Dim's wrist with his britva, Dim later exacts revenge. As Alex emerges from the cat lady's house, Dim is waiting on the doorstep. He has his oozy out, and before Alex can react, Dim "upped with it and it snaked whishhh and he chained me gentle and artistic like on the glazlids, me just closing them up in time." This moment is a brutal reversal: the weapon that Dim once used to blind enemies is now used to blind his former leader. Alex is left howling in pain, unable to see, and is easily captured by the arriving police. The chain, once a symbol of the gang's collective power, becomes an instrument of personal betrayal, marking the end of Alex's freedom and the beginning of his imprisonment.
